What you didn't see on Question Time last night

By Cristina Odone Politics Last updated: April 15th, 2011

I got rather emotional on Question Time last night. And then I got really scared.
What the television audience did not see, as it was expertly edited out of the pre-recorded programme, were two men who, in quick succession, disrupted proceedings. The first was a desperate Scouser, protesting the Government’s scrapping of its housing renewal programme. He ranted on, more in sorrow than in anger, about his derelict neighbourhood, and its lack of a future. But even before he’d finished, another protester bounded up to the panelists’ table. Muscular and shaven-headed, a scowl on his face, the man came right at us and for a nanosecond I was convinced we were about to witness an American-style shoot-out. I quickly sifted through his possible quarrels: the cuts, Libya, a bad NHS experience? Nope: Ryanair. He unfurled a homemade banner and I don’t know if it was the in-flight food or the tight seats that had got to him, but he was clearly a dissatisfied customer.
The unscheduled incident told me a lot more about my fellow panelists – and David Dimbleby – than the programme did. I agreed with hardly anything they said on politics, but to a man (and they were all men: Alex Salmond, Michael Howard, Chris Huhne and Peter Hain) they stayed calm, cool and collected while those around them seemed to lose their head. Most endearing was Dimbleby, who, on seeing my look of abject fear, smiled and mouthed “don’t worry”. So I didn’t.
